You see, deciding to be a writer is one thing but implementing them is a completely different ball game altogether. I started my blog a few days ago, the buzzword here is “few days”. I decided to write regularly, but I brutally ignored the ground rules.

So, here are a few things we all can do when we decide to be a writer:

  1. Read: Reading is fundamental to writing. You will get boat load of ideas when you read. I have started with the newspaper. You choose your material. ASAP.
  2. Write: Okay, this might make you chuckle, but the fact is, we have to start somewhere, someway, somehow. No matter how bad you think you write, write! Scribble, scratch, just write!
  3. Procrastinate: “Oh dear Lord, when you didn’t procrastinate in making me, why do you always make me procrastinate?”
    .
    .
I’ll write the next few steps sometime later.
  4. DON’T! Please don’t!
  5. Don’t give up: Your first few, in fact, several of your write-ups might appear stupid. You might want to tear that page, delete that document, just give right up…Hang in! You’ll reach perfection only when you practice. You will suck for sometime, but it’s better than giving up and never reaching your full potential.
  6. Identify you strengths: I’ll tell you what my strength is: I love having interpersonal communication. I thrive in those scenarios, so much that I get my dose of inspiration to write my next piece right after a conversation. Likewise, you identify yours.
  7. Seek feedback and respect them: Don’t ever hesitate to show your material to your near and dear ones. You will soon find those who truly give a flying fedora about your work and will provide a fitting feedback that will help you introspect and better yourself in the process.
  8. Self-critiquing: Most of us are critical of ourselves, but mind you, being critical does not mean you have to ridicule yourself. Get into the finer details of your work and you will see you be so much more better.
  9. Don’t write about what’s hot, make your work hot: The sure-shot way of losing one’s voice is by trying to voice something that’s hot in the market. Nope. Your originality will make it hot.
  10. Be an editor: Your first draft is never perfect, in fact even your 5th draft isn’t. Keep editing your work. Editing doesn’t mean that you erase stuff, editing essentially means you make it simpler and appealing as well.
  11. There’s no instant success: Of course, there is nothing like instant success. Patience is the key, but following these steps will help you carve a way.

There you go. 10 steps, in my humble estimation thatare your absolute DO’s if you are aspiring to be a writer. You can be. Believe it.
